A New Direction for the New Year

Direction signImage via Wikipedia
I love quotations and although I have posted over 600 of my favourite ones here on this blog, I have not exhausted my collection. In fact, my collection has only grown since started this site.

My original goal here was to organize my collection. I wanted to be able to find quotes quickly and easily. I have done that by adding labels to the posts. The handy search bar at the top of the page is also quite the asset.

I have been able to pull up my favourite quotes wherever I am. The are no longer confined to a file on my computer or a printed out copy in a binder.

I love that I have created a rich resource here over the past few years. This past year though, I haven`t been as motivated to update the site on a daily basis. As such, I have decided to do away with my weekly themed posts.

I used to run these features

Motivational Mondays - quotes to inspire
Tube Tuesdays - quotes from television or movies
What Wednesdays - quotes from songs
Storied Thursdays - quotes of and about Story
Anything Goes Fridays - the one day I didn`t choose a theme for my posts

The new focus for 2011 will be to update this site with quotations, images, songs, or videos whenever I feel like it. I may still stick to these theme days. I may not.

I don`t want to be handcuffed and I don`t want this to seem like a chore.

I hope you enjoy the site. I hope you dig through it and find quotes that are useful to you.

Thanks for visiting!

Back to December

This song is beautiful to begin with but what Taylor Swift does live here is mind-blowing. She truly deserves to be on my Top 10 albums of 2010.

Comedy for Your Friday

I love this bit from Abbott and Costello.

As a teacher, I have often seen some pretty impressive reasoning in my math class. This one takes the cake though. 13 x 7 = 28 and it makes sense? Weird and funny.

Jeremy Hotz is always good for a laugh!

Hope you enjoy the comedy. If you're in the mood for a mixtape, go to chasemarch.com

It's December 10th after all - comedy and mixtapes! What more can you ask for?

Not Done Talking

Doctor Who: "Anyway, that's not the plan."

Dr. Song: "There's a plan."

Doctor Who: "Not yet, I haven't finished talking."

- Doctor Who Series 5 Episode 5 "Flesh and Stone"

This quote speaks to the power of speech and how it can be used in the process of thought. It hearkens back to another favourite quote of mine,

“I have to engage in endless dialogue before I write,” McLuhan explains, “I want to talk a subject over and over … I do a lot of my serious work while I’m talking out loud to people. I’m feeling around, not making pronouncements. Most people use speech as a result of thought, but I use it as the process.”

- Fitzgerald, Judith. Marshall McLuhan: Wise Guy. XYZ Publishing: Montreal, 2001. pg 58-59.

I like to talk over ideas too. I find my best ideas actually come through in conversations. I don’t know why this is, but it does seem to be the case. When I read this quote, I knew that I wasn’t alone in this.

I have solved problems in my class by talking. I have come up with lesson plan ideas through speech. I have come up with behaviour management techniques, routines, and countless other useful things through the process of speech.

Cool, eh?

It's Not A Deal

CFRBImage via Wikipedia
"It's not a deal if you don't need it."

- Rubina Ahmed-Haq, Newstalk 1010

This one is for all of us that are working on our Christmas shopping. It's so easy to get caught up in sales or deals.

That's why it's important to adopt this motto. I know that I've bought stuff I didn't really want or need because it was on sale. Hopefully I won't get so easily caught up in that now.

How Special You Are (and aren't)

"When someone tells you how special you are, all that you can say is: This person given his particular taste and needs, desires, appetites and projections has a special desire for me, but that says nothing about me as a person. Someone else will find me quite unspecial and that too says nothing about me as a person."

Crates to Concrete

"From my beginnings as a studio rap tunes
Kids cut class but I'd be rapping in my high school bathrooms
Clap boom with freestyle and mix while
thick tiles, reviberatin' sounds I kicks wild
Whatever worked I rearanged it right
Putting my brain in tight flows
remained in night mode,
it strained til light glows til sunrise,
burnin' my eyes til I'm close so I finished it right,
Yo put up the mic, ah one two, check it check
and yo don't step I keep my memory set
maintained and do I screwed up to get ahead, but like my man said
it's gonna turn from green to red
so bring the breaks for the lyrics tapes so they can hear it
thinks they don't fear it wait til they can clear it
with tapes and the emcee at the mix shows thinkin' in quick flows,
I'm waitin' for my chance to flip prose
Save the drama for your baby mama
I wrote a comma at the end of ninety one
I'm back to bomb ya kid
you better come correct to streets save the week,
cause we're brining it from crates to concrete.

- Kish "Crates to Concrete" from the 1994 album A Nation of Hoods.

Check out Silent Cacophony today to see the autograph I got from Kish back when this album first dropped.

Sincere Apologies

Sorry that I haven't been updating this blog on a regular basis. I love it, I really do. It's a great collection but I just find myself so bogged down with things lately that updating this blog just hasn't been a priority.

Bear with me, I plan to return here with a vengeance really soon. Until then I will continue to post sporadically. I have been keeping Silent Cacophony running quite well though. Come see me over there in the mean time.

The Truth is Hidden Within Us

"Maybe there is a universal truth embedded in everyone's soul.

Maybe we all have the same story hiding inside
like a shared constant in our DNA.

Maybe this collective truth is responsible for the similarity in all our stories.

Truth has a power
and if we all gravitate towards similar ideas,
maybe we do so because those ideas are true,
written deep within is
and when we hear the truth,
even if we don't understand it,
we fell that truth resonate within us,
vibrating with our unconscious wisdom.

Perhaps the truth is not learned by us,
but rather

REcalled

REmembered

REcognized

as that which is already inside us."

Enchanted

I don't have one specific quote to share with you today for Tube Tuesdays. But I did want to point your attention to this movie, Enchanted.

I was completely blown away by this film. It is about a storybook princess who is banished to the "real world" by an evil Queen.

Amy Adams is absolutely perfect in this film. She sounds exactly how you'd expect a storybook princess to sound. She is wonderfully naive in this film as well. I couldn't help but fall in love with her.

The story is quite well done. It's a warm fairy tale that winds together everything we know about fairy tales in a novel way. If you have kids, watch it with them.

"Stories are the most helpful tools a child has for sorting this all out. Stories have authority. Stories normalize. Stories model behaviour and feeling. This Female MC is Amazing!

I've been a fan of Eternia since I first heard her about ten years ago. I recently met her and conducted an interview that will be posted on Silent Cacophony soon. I tell ya, if I wasn't a fan before that, I love her even more now. She was such an awesome person to talk to.

Her new album, At Last with producer MoSS came out yesterday. It is simply amazing. I love it.

If you like this video, please go out and support two amazing artists by buying their album. MoSS has been making a lot of noise lately producing some bangers for quite a few different artists.

I hope you enjoy this video.

Hit the Wall

Here's a video from one of my favourite rappers, Kyprios. Enjoy!

"Lately, Hey,
I get up thinking I'm gonna fall,
Can you save me, Hey,
From myself before I hit the wall,
Although I ain't really been myself at all,
Trying be the man that I am and stand tall,
Can you save me, Hey,
From myself before I hit the wall,

How you gonna say it when you playing yourself,
You're critics don't write you ain't believin the hype,
You in a fistfight boxing with your shadow,
Stuck in yesterday you ain't thinkin bout tomorow,
Yesterday is gone and better days are far away
you got a million brilliant thoughts and not a single thing to say,
I need to speak to God but even he's fronting,
Cause I only talk to him when I need something,
I'm needing him now I need a new style of who to be,
I try to buy new clothes but none of them look good on me,
Women, Alchohol, Tylenol, Feel the hangover,
Next day same damn battle different soldiers,
And It's over, I'm gettin older hells hot cold world even getting colder,
It's over, I'm gettin older hells hot cold world even getting colder,

Man I'm gonna hit the wall,
Bounce around like an open bar,
Sh*t I'm gonna hit the wall,
I hope it ain't it front of ya'll,

I'd write a better story if I had enough ink,
And I would chain us back together if I had the missing link,
Outsider, I love to be insider her,
Now I'm outsider, Nowhere for this spider,
Cause I'm a liar but I'll suck it all up,
And everybody told me Kyprios you'll f*ck it all up,
And they were right, With the stereotypes
I used to be the type of MC your stereo liked,
But I'ma loser whose a getting old,
Life is but a stage and I'm forgetting my role,
You take a drink then the drink takes you,
You only get one chance there is no take two,

(See I'm feelin like the anti-hip-hopper,
I can't say I'm the sh*t, when I'm feeling like sh*t,
And I'm hitting the wall)

I got no moves I ain't feelin alright and this isn't my hit I might say goodbye,
I need a piece amount of teams even pieces look free,
I'd rent a little piece of heaven if you'd lease it to me,
You kick it tonight until it bleeds to life,
But I'm sick of this sight without the will to fight,
(Latley), My whole shit is going crazy but I can take a jog cause it won't take me,

(Latley)
(Can you save me)"

- Kyprios "Hit the Wall"

Good Repartee

"Here is what Star Helmer, vice president of Harlequin, said about her books:

Good repartee is something that people generally talk about why they like romances, if they’re getting into specifics.  Most people when they’re angry and they’re getting in an argument do not have the witty, precise comebacks.  You usually think about it two days later and say, oh, you know, why didn’t I think of it?"

We Need that Illusion

"No words were more important than the warm tone of that voice as it told me, without speaking, that my grief meant something to him, that my life as a complete stranger meant something to him.

It seemed like so little, but it was everything. In the end, that’s all we ever really need. To face whatever that may be, we need nothing more than the occasional illusion that our life means something to someone who knows nothing about us."
